CHARLES BARGUE DRAWING COURSE
Gerald M. Ackerman, Charles Bargue with the collaboration of Jean-Léon Gérôme: Drawing Course.
The Dahesh Museum of Art is pleased to present the 2nd Edition of Bargue's Drawing Course. This complete reprint of the fabled but rare Drawing Course (Cours de Dessin) of Charles Bargue and Jean-Léon Gérôme, originally published in Paris in the 1860's and 1870's, was used to train aspiring artists in the fundamentals of drawing. With nearly 200 masterful lithographs, aspiring artists worldwide, including Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso, used it to hone their skills. While the book has 19th-century roots, it continues to serve artists, art teachers, illustrators, draftsman, students of art history, and those who work in classical art ateliers. "I thought my drawing skills were good enough, and that these plates wouldn't teach me anything I didn't already know, but I was greatly mistaken... It is important to start with fundamentals in any discipline. An aspiring writer must learn proper spelling, grammar and syntax before being able to convey a thought, feeling or point of view... The Bargue Drawing Course offers these fundamental to the aspiring draftsman, illustrator, painter, or artist to further their endeavors in the visual arts." Neeraj Patel, Concept Artist for Video Games "I find the Bargue Drawing Course invaluable to my progress as an artist. The publication allows me to work on my own as the next best option to moving to Florence or New York... The course is nothing short of a revelation. Mike Whynot, Independent Artist, Nova Scotia "I am thrilled to have this book. I am using plates to emphasize the importance of accuracy and finish; as opposed to the usual gesture and self-expression of the current trend... It may be a great novelty."
