Eloise Harriet Stannard (British, 1829–1915)
The Four Seasons: Spring, 1872
Oil on canvas, 17 x 15 in.

Stannard first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856, selecting four paintings of the seasons, a theme she recycled at least once more in 1872. Here, the artist chose an oval composition to express her vision of the spring’s renewal as embodied in the blossoming foliage and newborn birds.
