Frederic Leighton, P.R.A. (British, 1830–1896)
Studies for The Bacchante, ca. 1892
Charcoal and chalk on gray paper, 9 11/16 x 12 5/8 in.
Leighton made countless preparatory chalk drawings for his oil paintings. This sheet contains five studies, including a standing draped figure on the left that has not yet been related to a final composition. The four remaining drawings are all identifiable as exercises for a painting entitled The Bacchante (ca. 1892, private collection).
