Memorial Gifts Announced

We regret to report that, in September 2003, only a few weeks after they had attended the Dahesh Museum of Art's re-opening celebrations, Joseph and Nouhad Hanna of Huntington, West Virginia perished in a helicopter accident over the Grand Canyon. Dr. and Mrs. Hanna had long supported the Museum through frequent visits and Membership, as well by making it possible for their son to serve as a volunteer intern here. Mrs. Hanna had actively promoted the Museum's visibility in West Virginia by designing and installing widely acclaimed exhibitions about its collection and history at public venues in Huntington.

It is thus particularly meaningful that the Hanna estate has provided $1 million toward the Museum's general operations. The Museum would like to thank the couple's two sons, Afif Hanna and William Hanna, who have agreed to allow the Museum to name a handsome space on the gallery level, where all visitors are oriented after descending the grand staircase. This is an ideal way to remember these two special friends of the Museum in perpetuity.

The Museum's Trustees and staff are also very grateful to Mrs. Hanna's brother, Dr. Gibran Majdalany, for contributing $125,000 to the Museum in memory of the couple. Dr. Majdalany and his wife, Gosia, are longtime Members of the Museum and also wonderful ambassadors for it, especially in the lively community at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he works.

In autumn 2003, the following individuals sent generous contributions to the Museum in memory of Nouhad and Joseph Hanna, and in sympathy with the Hanna and Majdalany families: Caryn Block, Jeanette Bolus, Marjorie Castro, Raifah Kabbani, Pearl Rock Kane, Marcia L. Lamkin, Joshua N. Mandel, Michael Novia, Margaret Terry Orr, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Sobol, Joshua N. Solomon, The Sunshine Committee at Greenacres Elementary School (Scarsdale, NY), and Amira Zahid. We would also like to thank several units at Teachers College, Columbia University: the Department of Arts & Humanities, the Department of Organization & Leadership, and the 2002 Inquiry Cohort.
