Tigers on the Lookout (Tigers Watching Stags)
Watercolor, 12 5/8 x 16 5/8 in.

A version of this work was exhibited at the Salon in 1921 under the name Tigers on the Lookout (Tigres aux Aguets), and photographs of the work were printed in reviews of the Salon in L’Illustration (May 7, 1921) and The Illustrated London News (July 23, 1921). The subject, two tigers perched on a rocky outcropping observing their prey below, was a theme Rötig revisited numerous times, sometimes replacing the tigers with lions and flipping the composition, to make the felines face the opposite direction. The present work indeed shares notable similarities to another work by Rötig in the Dahesh collection, Lions on the Prowl (Lions à l’âffut), a version of which was exhibited at the Salon in 1920, under the same title.
